Pyke Counters: Best Counter Picks and Tips

Pyke counter guide preview

Pyke turns every small positioning mistake into a death, which is exhausting to play against. The consolation is that every part of his kit has a specific, buyable answer.

His hook can be blocked, his dash can be stopped, and his execute can be healed past. The trouble is that most bot lanes never think about any of those three things until after he has snowballed.

How to Beat Pyke

Matchup Guide · Patch 26.14 · 3 Counter Picks

Pyke turns every small positioning mistake into a death, which is exhausting to play against. The consolation is that every part of his kit has a specific, buyable answer.

A support who executes you through your own health bar and gets paid for it isn't a normal thing to have to play against, and standing one step too far forward shouldn't be fatal as often as it's with him on the map. He's a roaming assassin in the support slot, and he's beaten by preparation rather than by out-fighting him.

What a Counter Needs
  • A way to block or dodge the Bone Skewer [Q] harpoon
  • Something that stops a dash, because Phantom Undertow [E] is his engage
  • Healing or shielding that keeps allies above the execute threshold

Pyke Overview

Strengths: What Makes Him Dangerous

  • Death From Below [R] executes anything below a health threshold rather than dealing normal damage, and it recasts for free if a champion dies inside it. One good ultimate can be three kills.
  • Gift of the Drowned Ones [Passive] regenerates the damage he has recently taken whenever he's hidden, which means he heals in a bush or behind a wall and returns at full health.
  • Bone Skewer [Q] pulls you from 400 units when held, and hitting a champion refunds most of the mana cost, so there's no real cost to spamming it.
  • Ghostwater Dive [W] is camouflage plus a large movement speed burst, which is what makes him the best roaming support in the game.
  • Phantom Undertow [E] dashes him and leaves a phantom that returns to stun everything in its path, so his engage and his crowd control are the same button.

Weaknesses: Where You Get In

  • He can't gain maximum health from any source. His passive converts it into attack damage instead, which means he's permanently one of the squishiest champions in a teamfight.
  • Bone Skewer [Q]'s hold cast is a projectile. Anything that blocks, absorbs, or intercepts missiles simply deletes his engage.
  • Phantom Undertow [E] is a dash, so any tool that stops dashes stops the engage before the stun ever fires.
  • Death From Below [R] only executes below a threshold. Keeping allies above it turns his ultimate into a small amount of physical damage and a wasted 100 second cooldown.
  • Camouflage [Passive] is beaten by vision. He's revealed by any nearby unit or ward, so a properly warded river removes the roam pressure that makes him so hard to play against.

Countering Pyke

Based on the strengths and weaknesses above, beating Pyke comes down to champions who can accomplish at least one of the following:

  • Block the hook. Bone Skewer [Q] is the entry point for almost every Pyke play, and it's a projectile that several champions can eat outright.
  • Stop the dash. Phantom Undertow [E] is his only way to convert a hook into a kill on a champion who's paying attention, and dash-stopping tools shut it down completely.
  • Keep everyone above the execute threshold. Healing and shielding don't just mitigate his ultimate, they remove it, because it only executes.
  • Ward the river and the bushes. His passive heals him only while he's hidden, so vision both stops the roam and stops the reset.

If you're already locked into the matchup without any of those tools, these strategies still work:

Playing a Bad Pyke Matchup

Stand where the hook has to travel through a minion. Bone Skewer [Q] stops on the first enemy it hits and prefers champions, but a wall of minions between you and him means the angle isn't there.

Treat him as a full assassin, not a support. His passive turns health into attack damage, so his damage is closer to a jungler's than to a support's from the second item onward.

Don't commit to a fight below the execute threshold. A Pyke ultimate that connects on one low champion refreshes for free, and that's how a lost skirmish becomes a lost teamfight.

Punish him while he's pushed up. He has no maximum health scaling and no sustain that works in vision, so a bot lane that turns on him in the open usually just kills him.

Best Pyke Counters

These three take away different pieces of him: the hook, the dash, and the execute. Any one of them is enough to make the lane manageable.

Braum Eats the Hook

Unbreakable [E] is the single cleanest answer to Pyke in the game. Braum raises his shield in a direction and intercepts enemy missiles outright, and the first one he blocks deals no damage at all. Bone Skewer [Q]'s hold cast, the harpoon that pulls, is a projectile, which means Braum can simply cancel the opening move of the entire matchup on an 8 second cooldown at rank 5.

After that, Braum's own kit punishes a champion who can't build health. Winter's Bite [Q] slows from 1000 units and stacks Concussive Blows [Passive], and once his ally's attacks bring the stack count to four, Pyke is stunned and takes bonus magic damage. Stand Behind Me [W] also hands the attack damage carry armor and magic resist right as Pyke commits.

Poppy champion icon

Poppy Refuses the Dash

Steadfast Presence [W] is the mechanical answer to the part of Pyke people find hardest to react to. It projects a field that stops enemy dashes outright, and anything stopped by it gets grounded and slowed on top of taking damage. Phantom Undertow [E] is a dash, so a well-timed Poppy W ends the engage before the phantom ever comes back to stun anyone.

The passive on that ability also gives her armor and magic resist that doubles while she's low, which is exactly the health range where Pyke's ultimate wants to find her. Heroic Charge [E] then carries him into a wall for a stun, and Hammer Shock [Q]'s max health damage is fine even against a champion who refuses to buy any.

Soraka champion icon

Soraka Denies the Execute

Soraka doesn't stop anything Pyke does. She makes the payoff impossible. Death From Below [R] only executes targets below a health threshold and deals heavily reduced damage to everyone else, so a support who can keep the bot lane topped up removes the ultimate rather than surviving it.

Astral Infusion [W] drops to a 2 second cooldown at rank 5, which is faster than Pyke can create a second execute window, and Wish heals every ally on the map with a bonus for anyone under 40% health. That's the exact bracket he needs them in. Equinox [E] is the underrated part of the matchup, since it silences everything inside it and roots on expiry, which is a hard stop on a champion mid-combo.

Itemizing Against Pyke

Pyke's damage is entirely physical and his pressure depends on being unseen, so the shopping list is armor plus vision plus one insurance policy:

Control Ward Plated Steelcaps Immortal Shieldbow Guardian Angel

Control Wards are the cheapest counterplay in the game against a camouflage champion who also heals while hidden, Plated Steelcaps handles a fully physical kit, Immortal Shieldbow's low health shield lifts you back above the execute threshold at the exact moment his ultimate lands, and Guardian Angel means the one hook that does land doesn't end the game.
