Being poked for ten straight minutes by someone who never has to step forward is its own particular misery, and Caitlyn is the champion who does it best.
It's her range and her safety that make the lane exhausting, and the champions who beat her are the ones that refuse to play the poke war on her terms at all.

How to Beat Caitlyn
Being poked for ten straight minutes by someone who never has to step forward is its own particular misery, and Caitlyn is the champion who does it best.
She has the longest basic attack range of any marksman in the game, and every part of her kit exists to keep you at the end of it. If the lane feels like you're never allowed to play, that isn't a misread. That's the design working. She's genuinely strong at holding a lane, which is a different thing from winning the game on her own, and the gap between those two is where every counter below lives. The lane is decided by whether she gets to use her range for free.
- Range past 1250 units, or the sustain to walk through the poke
- A root or ground effect, because 90 Caliber Net [E] is her only escape
- Wave control good enough that she never gets a free siege
Caitlyn Overview
Strengths: What Makes Her Dangerous
- Headshot [Passive] doubles her attack range against a trapped or netted target, which means a landed trap turns 650 range into a poke from somewhere you can't reach.
- Yordle Snap Trap [W] holds multiple charges at once and roots for 1.5 seconds. Stacking traps around a choke makes an entire area unusable.
- Piltover Peacemaker [Q] reaches 1250 units and deals full damage to anything her trap revealed, so she can win a poke war without ever being in danger.
- 90 Caliber Net [E] both slows you and knocks her backwards, which is a slow and a disengage on the same button.
- Ace in the Hole [R] fires from 3500 units and scales with her critical strike chance and critical damage, which makes her one of the best turret siege and cleanup champions in the game.
Weaknesses: Where You Get In
- 90 Caliber Net [E] doesn't work while she's rooted. The self knockback is a movement effect, so any root lands her in melee range with no way out.
- Her escape is on a 16 second cooldown at rank 1. That's a very long window for anything with a gap closer.
- Traps only matter if you walk into them. They're visible, they expire, and a warded lane makes most of them wasted charges.
- Ace in the Hole [R] can be intercepted by any enemy champion in the path, so a body between her and the target simply eats it.
- She has no sustain of her own. A lane that heals or shields through her chip damage removes the only pressure she generates before her first item.
Countering Caitlyn
Based on the strengths and weaknesses above, beating Caitlyn comes down to champions who can accomplish at least one of the following:
- Out-range the 1250 unit Peacemaker. Artillery mages and long range poke turn her strongest tool into her second longest one.
- Land a root and the lane flips. She can't net out of a root, and her only other option is walking, at 650 attack range, next to whoever rooted her.
- Erase the poke rather than dodging it. Shields and heals in the bot lane mean Headshot [Passive] chip never converts into a dive or a kill.
- Take the wave away from her. Caitlyn wants a long lane and free traps. A shoved wave and a warded river gives her neither.
If you're already locked into the matchup without any of those tools, these strategies still work:
Playing a Bad Caitlyn Matchup
Stand behind your minions rather than beside them. Piltover Peacemaker [Q] deals less damage to everything past the first target it hits, so a minion between you cuts the poke substantially.
Watch for the trap before you commit to a trade, not during it. Her damage spike comes entirely from Headshot [Passive] on a rooted target, so the trade only goes badly if you step on the setup first.
Force her to use 90 Caliber Net [E] early. Once it's down for 16 seconds, she's a 650 range champion with no escape standing in a lane she has been pushing.
Put a body in front of Ace in the Hole [R] when it starts channeling. Any enemy champion in the line intercepts it, so a support stepping forward turns her ultimate into nothing.
Best Caitlyn Counters
All three of these beat Caitlyn without ever trying to win a straight ranged trade with her, which is the only fight she's actually built to win.
Xerath Out-ranges the Sheriff
Caitlyn is exactly the sort of champion Xerath is built to bully, because he beats her at the only thing she does. Shocking Orb [E] reaches 1050 units, a fully charged Arcanopulse [Q] reaches further than that, and Rite of the Arcane [R] covers 5000 units. Caitlyn's Peacemaker stops at 1250.
Because he wins the range war, she never gets to establish the poke pattern her lane depends on. Every time she steps up to place a trap or line up a Peacemaker, Shocking Orb [E] stuns her, and she can't net out of a stun any more than she can net out of a root.
Swain Punishes the Net
Swain is the pick that punishes the specific weakness in her kit. Nevermove [E] reaches 850 units, roots everything in the area, and lets him reactivate it to pull every rooted champion toward him. Caitlyn's 90 Caliber Net [E] can't fire her backwards while she's rooted, so the sequence ends with her standing in melee range of a Swain who's about to transform.
The rest of the matchup goes the same way. Ravenous Flock [Passive] heals him off every soul fragment he collects and permanently grows his health, which walks straight through Headshot [Passive] chip damage, and Demonic Ascension [R] drains anything within 650 units. Vision of Empire [W] is the bonus, since it slows her from across the map and reveals her for several seconds afterward.
Seraphine Erases the Poke
Seraphine wins this lane by making Caitlyn's chip damage irrelevant. Surround Sound [W] shields the whole bot lane and, if Seraphine is already shielded, heals her allies for a percentage of their missing health instead. Caitlyn has no burst before her first item, so poke she can't convert into a dive is poke that gets healed off between waves.
Beat Drop [E] also out-ranges her at 1300 units, and it upgrades based on what it hits: a slowed target gets rooted, and an immobilized target gets stunned. Against a champion whose only escape is a self knockback that a root shuts off, that scaling is the whole matchup. Stage Presence [Passive] doubling every third cast means the wave clear comes for free alongside it.
Itemizing Against Caitlyn
Caitlyn's damage is entirely physical and heavily critical strike based, so armor and a stasis window cover almost everything she can do:
Plated Steelcaps is close to mandatory against a lane built on basic attacks, Zhonya's Hourglass lets you stasis through Ace in the Hole [R] and any all-in that follows a trap, Randuin's Omen cuts her critical strike damage directly, and Guardian Angel means the one trap you do step on costs you a few seconds instead of the game.
