What's This Weird Box?

Hey all, some of you might be wondering what this weird looking new QR Code is below and on the side bar:

Well backing up a bit, a QR Code is a two-dimensional barcode that is readable by smartphones. It can store a lot more information than a barcode, which is why the above is preferable over barcodes.

The above represents a bitcoin address, a place where you can send me bitcoin if you're feeling generous, which will boost my ego and make me feel warm and fuzzy inside.

What is Bitcoin?

Bitcoin is a digital currency that is not backed by any country's central bank or government. It uses multiple copies of all the transactions that have ever occurred at many servers around the world.

What Makes It Better Than Money?

The classic term "money" is what people call "Fiat Currency", which is money backed by the government. This money gains value from the belief that the government sponsoring it will be responsible and allow it to continue having value in the future (AKA not print tons of it unless absolutely required etc). It also relies on people continuing to use it.

Bitcoin is a limited supply currency, and mathematically has a cap. Your trust then goes into the technology and the belief people will keep using it.

Essentially, you shift your trust from people acting responsibly to mathematical formulas.

How to Get Started

If you're in the US, registering for a Coinbase account is the fastest way to get started, but you'll likely want to get a hardware wallet once you get the ball rolling.

A good resource is the Bitcoin sticky FAQ on reddit, which will give you almost everything you need to know.

Of course, if you have questions or want to just chat about Bitcoin/cryptocurrencies in general, feel free to comment below!
