2017 Best Champions Tier List - Solo Queue Ranked Ladder Climbing - Patch 7.15 Update

Hey folks, it's getting late today but I made the goal of putting up the new Patch 7.15 tier list by Monday night and I'm sticking to it! The FOTM Tier List will likely come out sometime tomorrow as it's getting a wee late around these parts.

This time around Riot's hit a ton of champions with love taps, and old favorites are bubbling back up to the surface. Cho'Gath jungle continues to be incredibly powerful despite the nerfs, and this Zac nerf really crushed him back to a less than balanced state.

Instructions and Caveats:

  • Champions in BOLD I will talk about shortly
  • Champions UNDERLINED may be over/undervalued, but aren't/haven't played enough for me to make a better judgment.
  • Within each tier, the champions are strongest from left to right, but within a tier each champion's strength is relatively close. This is especially true for Tiers 2 and 3 where these champions are ALL highly playable and player dependent on how strong they are in-game.
  • Win Rates are important in analyzing each champion's strength but are not the end-all criteria for any champion's position.
  • Professional Picks may not necessarily translate into good picks for solo queue ladder, the two have slightly different meta-games and skill levels.
  • The creator of this list is diamond, so there may be some personal bias towards higher tier play on certain champions.

Champion Explanations

  • Azir [Tier 2 Mid] - Azir in his current state isn't exactly the easiest champion to play, but in his best form he's on the low end of balanced. The buffs this time around added a little more damage to his late-game, which allows a snowballed Azir to continue snowballing a little harder, but it still takes a good amount to get to that point.
  • Cho'Gath [God Tier Jungle] - Cho'Gath wasn't in God Tier last patch simply because I wasn't quite ready to pronounce him God Tier without more data. His ganks aren't particularly strong unless your prediction abilities are on point, but his healthy clears and late-game initiation potential/AOE damage more than make-up for it. In the jungle, Cho'Gath also gets to focus on maxing out his E, resulting in a much stronger duelist than a Cho'Gath who has to max his W for safer waveclear.
  • Janna [God Tier Support] - Janna's showing some oddly high win rates this patch, but it's hard to say exactly what's leading up to it. The lethality meta does bring around a lot of AD-based champions to the field, and Janna synergizes incredibly well with them. Nomad's Medallion is also particularly strong after Patch 7.13, so it may also just be a combination of the two. Either way, she's been strong and is still strong if not stronger.
  • Kassadin [Tier 1 Mid] - Kassadin continues being a strong meta pick despite the teamfight oriented picks that are popular lately. His ability to disrupt the map and force skirmishes allows his team to keep the enemy off guard. However, beware grouping before he gets his first few items, as choking out Kassadin's farm does your team no good.
  • Lucian [Tier 2 Mid] - Lucian mid is one of those pocket picks that does well against most melee spellcasters. If you're good enough, you can starve enemies out of laning phase by harassing them non-stop. However, if you're too aggressive it tends to draw the ire of the enemy jungler, especially if you keep using your escape for offensive purposes. If you do decide to play Lucian mid, make sure that 1) You're actually good at Lucian to begin with; and 2) Keep your eye out for the jungler.
  • Maokai [God Tier Top] - Maokai is one of those champions that fits the meta perfectly. His engagement power is immense, and his ability to initiate or counterengage team fights is incredibly strong right now. I'd say his new identity has certainly rediscovered his niche in this game as his former unstoppable tank, but with some more crowd-control attached.
  • Nasus [Tier 2 Top] - From first glance, the percentage armor reduction looks pretty good on his Spirit Fire [E]. However, it weakens his early to mid game where enemies build relatively little armor. It also moves his power spikes from mid-game further back to late game, where additive bonuses from his Siphoning Strike start losing out against the percentage based gains of marksmen.
  • Thresh [Tier 1 Support] - Thresh's win rate took quite a nose dive this patch after an apparent bug fix where Thresh's Flay [E] was stunning enemies for a brief moment after displacing them. I'm not so sure it's all a direct result of this one bug fix, but that's really the only change to him this patch.
  • Twitch [God Tier Marksman] - Just reiterating that Twitch is absurd right now, especially since the Caitlyn nerfs. If you're a marksman main that's not playing Twitch when Draven's banned, then you must not like winning very much.
