2016 Best Champions Tier List - Ranked Ladder Climbing - Patch 6.17 Update

As some players correctly guessed, Vi is now extremely powerful since the latest buffs to her in Patch 6.17. Additionally, it looks like Riot shied away from nerfing Yasuo this patch, but instead elected to buff up Riven, every Yasuo main's backup champion. Meanwhile, Jhin continues to dominate the bot lane, despite Riot's best attempts to bring Jinx into the fold.

Instructions and Caveats:

  • Champions in BOLD I will talk about shortly
  • Champions UNDERLINED may be over/undervalued, but aren't/haven't played enough for me to make a better judgement.
  • Within each tier the champions are strongest from left to right, but within a tier each champion's strength is relatively close. This is especially true for Tiers 2 and 3 where these champions are ALL highly playable and player dependent on how strong they are in-game.
  • This tier list takes data from ALL players; however, since the majority of players fall in the first three tiers, the majority of data points will come from there.
  • Win Rates are important in analyzing each champion's strength, but are not the end-all criteria for any champion's position.
  • The creator of this list is diamond, so there may be some personal bias towards higher tier play on certain champions.

Champion Explanations

  • Ahri [God Tier Mid] - After repeated nerfs to Viktor and Azir, Ahri is back on top as the most played mid laner in the game. Using her triple gap closer and packing enough power to take down enemy champions without landing a single skillshot, she dominates battlefields with ease.
  • Graves [Tier 1 Top] - In patch 6.16, Graves received a bug fix that listed "Fixed a bug where an enemy hit with multiple shells from Graves' basic attacks only applied a single stack of Black Cleaver". Most people missed this, but it turns out that it is actually a large buff for the low percentage of Graves players that actually build Cleaver top lane. Try it out, you won't be disappointed.
  • Jayce [Tier 1 Top] - When it comes to champions that Riot really wants players to use more often but do not want to make too overpowered, Jayce is clearly near the top of the list. He's been consistently buffed incrementally, and I think that this latest small buff is finally enough to bring him from being just okay to actually good.
  • Jhin [God Tier Marksman] - Jhin's nerfs in Patch 6.17 mostly targeted the ability of players to initiate fights with his ultimate. However, outside competitive play, ladder summoners generally did not initiate fights via Jhin's ultimate. As a result, this nerf only affected a small group of players heavily. Meanwhile, he is still an excellent duelist and can snowball very hard through the game.
  • Jinx [God Tier Marksman] - Similar to Jayce, Riot really wants to bring Jinx back into the fold as an exciting marksman to watch. She has clear counterplay and fun mechanics, but can still be dispatched with good coordination. After the Patch 6.17 update, it looks like her play rate shot up from #7 all the way up to #3, right behind Lucian and Ezreal. Expect to see it continue to rise.
  • Kled [Tier 3 Top] - As players understand Kled's kit better, we now see that he is actualy relatively balanced and appears to be strongest as a top laner. However, nothing about him screams "overpowered" yet, but he is certainly very strong once he picks up his third item.
  • Rek'Sai [Tier 2 Jungle] - Reports of her demise were largely exaggerated. Despite being nerfed repeatedly, she still remains a balanced jungler with clear strengths and weaknesses.
  • Riven [Tier 1 Top] - Yasuo is far too popular right now, and Riot doesn't like it. As a result, game designers have reluctantly acknowledged that the only way to create champion diversity is to give Yasuo players their second favorite champion back, and that's Riven. These two are potentially the highest "outplay" champions in the top lane as a result of their low cooldown spells with no resource costs. In her current buffed state, Riven proves to be one of the strongest split-pushers and/or flank champions in the game.
  • Soraka [God Tier Support] - After another patch goes by without nerfs, Soraka is now the most banned support in the game and remains extremely painful to lane against.
  • Vi [God Tier Jungle] - Vi is an example of another champion that was already doing very well before her buff, but was simply unpopular. As a result, her changes this patch were enough to bring attention to her strength and also push her ahead of the pack in terms of sheer numbers. Her ganks were always very strong, and she currently deals a TON of damage with Trinity Force. To put it simply, she packs a punch.
  • Zed [Tier 2 Mid] - Zed's current win rate is currently sitting at the lowest it's been in five patches, but his play rate only rises. Although he is definitely not a champion for beginners to try out in ranked, players that have mastered him do still enjoy his perks, making him a relatively balanced for difficulty.
    • The purpose of this list is for discussion and to provide a starting point for champion selection.
