Top Team Comps #87: Klepto-fever

With the advent of the Kleptomancy rune, champions like Ezreal are absolutely demolishing the rift via massive gold advantages, which translate to faster power spikes and subsequently, more powerful champions. Not only does the rune provide extra gold, but it also increases the next auto range after casting a spell. This makes it trivial for Sona to pop off a quick Q + Powerchord combo, and also makes Ezreal extremely good at harassing in lane.

They're not the only ones that benefit though...

Introduction

With the advent of the Kleptomancy rune, champions like Ezreal are absolutely demolishing the rift via massive gold advantages, which translate to faster power spikes and subsequently, more powerful champions. Not only does the rune provide extra gold, but it also increases the next auto range after casting a spell. This makes it trivial for Sona to pop off a quick Q + Powerchord combo, and also makes Ezreal extremely good at harassing in lane.

They're not the only ones that benefit though...

Champions

Ezreal [Marksman] - A lot has been said about Ezreal above, and we have a full guide available on Klepto Ezreal. It's very strong and ends up very far ahead. Since Ezreal procs on-hit effects on his Mystic Shot [Q], he's an ideal candidate for this mastery.
---

Gangplank [Mid] - In a meta where champions like Zed and Kassadin are roaming, melee champions with strong zoning capabilities like Gangplank do well as mid-laners. He also gets a lot from Kleptomancy, as it procs on his Q as well.
--

Sona [Support] - Some people may argue that Lulu does better in this role, but Sona is overall much easier to play and does provide this team with some much needed initiation. With all the mobility this team has, Lulu's champion saving mechanisms aren't quite as needed, but the team does need some strong initiation.

While Summon Aery may be better for now, if it gets nerfed then expect Kleptosona to take over the rift.

---

Maokai [Jungler] - Maokai is this team's primary form of initiation, and is the only champion that shouldn't be taking Kleptomancy on account of him not being in lane often enough to proc it. However, he does provide a much needed front line, initiation, and magic damage for the team.

---

Yasuo [Top Laner] - The reason Yasuo works better as a top laner than a mid-laner in this setup is because the key is to continuously harass via his Q, which also happens to proc Kleptomancy. Against melee laners you can do this much more often, whereas against squishy mids Yasuo tends to go for more of a burst oriented tactical maneuver.

Key Concepts

  • Try not to all-in too early, as this team is going to be behind in stats until they cash in at least their first back. The early game is still strong for these champions though, so don't be afraid to fight back. Just don't aim for all-ins.
  • Poke as much as possible. Maokai can also be used as a counter-engagement tool if your team just happens to be destroying the enemy team in poke damage.

Countering

Countering this team is actually a bit difficult, but as long as you can snowball early on, you can beat them before they gain a massive gold advantage.

Here is an example team that may succeed:
  • Aurelion Sol [Mid] - Use your high waveclear and roam before Gangplank can clear waves with his barrels to snowball.
  • Shaco [Jungle] - Self-explanatory, but pick off squishies and keep them from playing aggressively, resulting in reduced Klepto stacks.
  • Pantheon [Top] - Trading poke with Pantheon is never a good idea, and he sits on Yasuo in general.
  • Leona [Support] - Early all-ins against level 1 Sona/Ezreal is a near guaranteed kill.
  • Draven [Marksman] - There's nothing an Ezreal hates more than getting ran down after using Arcane Shift.
As a whole, this counter composition works well as a high powered snowball comp as well.
