2016 Champion Tier List - Ranked 3s Twisted Treeline - Patch 6.20 Update

Twisted Treeline, the forgotten younger brother of Summoner's Rift, is an unlawful place of darkness where outlaws like Graves rule the yard, and strange creatures from the depths surge at the top of the tier list.

Much of the meta still revolves around the current popular Summoner's Rift champions, but certain staples of the map like Maokai and Gragas continue to dominate, even with their low visibility on other maps.

THE TWISTED TREELINE

Introduction

Twisted Treeline, the forgotten younger brother of Summoner's Rift, is an unlawful place of darkness where outlaws like Graves rule the yard, and strange creatures from the depths surge at the top of the tier list.

Much of the meta still revolves around the current popular Summoner's Rift champions, but certain staples of the map like Maokai and Gragas continue to dominate, even with their low visibility on other maps.

Current Metagame
Right now there are THREE main methods of playing Twisted Treeline:
  1. Duo top with a support like Braum and a marksman like Lucian
  2. Two solo lanes with a jungler (Generally glass cannons stay bot)
  3. Duo top with a melee bruiser w/Smite + Braum or Maokai and a standard AP or ranged AD bot
It seems for the most part higher tier teams prefer the support meta running exhaust + heal, whereas lower divisions seem to do better with the level advantage from having a jungler.

Most strong top lane solo champions will also do well with a support with strong CC for invasion potential.

Based off of this, I'm splitting this tier list into "roles" similar to the solo queue 5s list. However, as there are only 3 positions open, I won't be including every champion into this list. If you feel that I've missed out on a strong champion, please let me know and I'll include it in the next update.

Tier 4 [Not Played Often]: Everybody else. Not to say that you can't win with other champions, but for the most part the ones above will give you plenty to work with. Feel free to try out other strategies and post your experiences in the comment section below!

    AD/AP Positioning

Due to the way the map is arranged, bot lane is generally considered the "safer" lane, so the solo laner almost always goes here. However, as this game mode is somewhat uncommon, you may see teams send two champions to bot lane. As a result, it's generally best to send an AP bot with long range waveclear, as these champions can deal with both 1v1 and 1v2 lanes.

This means that for the most part, the AD based champion will go top. However, swapping these around isn't necessarily a bad thing, but it's a good idea to make sure that you have a mix of damage types so that the enemy team can't easily itemize against you.

When you duo in one lane with a support, top is almost always better as it's easier to invade their jungle through the top lane, and it's much easier to bully the melee laner as well since they generally lack ranged waveclear.

    Champion Explanations

    • Aurelion Sol [Tier 3 Bot] - At first glance, Aurelion Sol seems like exactly what you want from a bot laner. His powerful early game clear and his status as a tanky sustained mage are pretty much all you can ask for in a bot laner. However, in practice, he does not work out quite as well. The reason is that Twisted Treeline generally has less room for kiting, and it is very easy to spot him coming as a result of his visible stars.
    • Darius [God Tier Top] - Darius continues to be one of the most dominant top laners in the game when it comes to a 1v1 top lane. If you use a support + marksman composition he can be countered effectively, but his late game still tends to be extremely difficult to play against. If he manages to kill one enemy, Darius can generally snowball the fight by himself through resets and sustain.
    • Graves [God Tier Everywhere] - Because of his strong wave clear, Graves works as a somewhat sub-optimal bot laner. However, he is just SO strong right now that he's a priority pick in any position. If it comes down to it, playing him bot lane is better than allowing the enemy team to pick him up. The vast number of walls allows him to hit his double Q burst very quickly, and the straight lanes guarantee maximum effectiveness on his ultimate. If the core mages are banned out, then he's fine to pick up.
    • Jayce [Tier 1 Bot] - The straight lanes in this game allow Jayce to be very effective when it comes to clearing waves from long range. He still works better as a top laner, but can be used bottom quite effectively as well depending on who he's up against.
    • Kennen [Tier 2 Bot] - From a team-fighting perspective, Kennen is certainly just as strong as he is on Summoner's Rift. However, the main issue with this Yordle is his low early game clear ability bot lane, and his somewhat lacking sustained damage when his ultimate is down.
    • Morgana [Tier 1 Bot] - Morgana is still perfectly viable as a bot laner. However, champions like Brand cause a lot of issues as they can one shot her black shield with a single spell, effectively rending it useless.
    • Poppy [God Tier Top] - Similar to Graves, the number of walls available in this game make Poppy extremely effective and allows her to stun from virtually any angle.
    • Zac [God Tier Jungle] - Even when he was not strong on Summoner's Rift, Zac was still always a prime choice for twisted Treeline as a result of the extraordinary number of gank angles available to him and the lack of any wards on the map. Now that hs is one of the strongest overall, his natural synergy with this map makes him incredibly potent.
    Disclaimer:
    • The purpose of this list is for discussion and to provide a starting point for hero selection.
    • While I'm by no means a guru on the Twisted Treeline I do enjoy playing the game mode quite a bit and hope that they'll introduce the solo queue 3v3 some day.
    • That being said, take this tier list with a grain of salt and feel free to engage in open debate in the comment section with your own thoughts and comments. As the game mode isn't all that popular right now, hopefully this list will help spur some of you to try it out!
