Top 10 Things Players Do Incorrectly

Apologies for the lack of posts these last two days, I've been a bit sick and not feeling up to it. I did however manage to squeak in a few games on a few smurf accounts, and there are definitely a few reoccurring themes that cropped up. Below is a Top 10 list of things players can definitely improve on; while higher division players tend to do them less, it definitely still happens more often than we'd like to admit.

Introduction

Apologies for the lack of posts these last two days, I've been a bit sick and not feeling up to it. I did however manage to squeak in a few games on a few smurf accounts, and there are definitely a few reoccurring themes that cropped up. Below is a Top 10 list of things players can definitely improve on; while higher division players tend to do them less, it definitely still happens more often than we'd like to admit.

1. Not Flashing For Easy Kills

Most people willingly flash for someone who is visibly almost dead. However, it's much rarer for one or more people to flash for someone who's at full health, even when they're visibly out of position. If you have a numbers advantage and the ability to do so, even three flash + ultimates from your team onto an enemy carry is worth it, especially late game.

The excuse "he'd just flash away too" isn't viable. At least force him to take that option or die wishing he did.

2. Wasting Flash

The opposite of not flashing of course, is the ol' waste of flash. This is the moment when you see a Lee Sin flash + Q, hit Q, hit E, and hit his ultimate, but yet still dies to the super fed Kalista. 

There's also the preemptive flash from a full tank Lee Sin Q: for some reason many players seem dreadfully scared of a Lee Sin pulling off an "insec" play. Truth be told, at most divisions they'll probably fail. Instead, you can pull them deeper into your team and bait the jump.

Of course "wasted flashes" are much easier to identify after they're wasted, and may have seemed like a good idea at the time. This means it's important to master the exact range of flash as well as understanding the damage output of the champions you play. There's a reason why 99% of players pick up the spell, good/bad usage of it affects your success rate drastically.

3. Saving Ultimates Late Game

The classic "Amumu: I would only have been able to catch two" syndrome. Late game, there's only a priority list of people to pick off. As long as you get at least that top priority person, using your ultimate to make sure that champion dies is always worth it. Again, even if you have to flash ult that one fed Jinx, JUST DO IT.


4. Prioritizing Dragon Over Turrets

With the sole exception of the fifth dragon, turrets are almost always more valuable than dragon. In fact, taking down turrets can lead your team to picking up dragons easier than otherwise available.

Turrets provide both map control and global gold. Meanwhile, the only major advantage that dragon provides is removing the objective from the map and a minor boost.

While you should definitely make sure to not give up free dragons, if your team gets an ace and has a choice between turrets and dragons, pick turrets.

5. Trying to Do Objectives Without Pink Wards

This is part of the reason why supports are so easy to climb with in solo queue. Despite the fact that anybody on the team can buy a pink ward and should do so providing they're not at full build, it's rare at lower divisions that you'll even have a sweeper on every team, much less pink wards.

For some reason, people assume that nowhere on the map is warded unless they see it warded. The proper assumption on the other hand, is that Dragon and Baron are ALWAYS warded, and that if you don't see the enemy team approaching, they're coming for you.

6. Not Building Aegis

Both Locket and Banner of Command are amazing additions to any team, and at least one should almost always be a part of every team's arsenal. For the same reason that Aegis wins so many ARAM games, it's also why it wins so many team fights as well.

Too often, supports end up building something silly like Zhonyas on Sona instead of an Aegis when the team has none. Although it's not as obvious as an 0-5 top laner, this impacts the game just as hard depending on the enemy team composition.

If supports decide not to build it, junglers, and even top laners can build it as well (depending on how fed enemy AP champions are). However, I highly suggest not building it on your ADC or mid laner...

7. Trying to Force Nexus After Taking Down Early Inhibitor

Surprisingly, this is somehow still an issue everywhere from Bronze to Diamond. Once you down an inhibitor, it WILL eventually come back up. Don't waste time if the entire enemy team is coming back up soon!
  1. There are TWO turrets at once to siege if you want to continue onwards to the nexus, and ONE turret at a time on all the lanes 
  2. If you fight close enough to the nexus, your team may need to fight off THREE lanes worth of minions instead of ONE.
  3. The nexus is CLOSER to the spawn point than the other lanes, resurrected champions will be that much faster at the start of homeguard's speed boost.
Unless the entire enemy team is dead, sieging further in a lane without an inhibitor is extremely difficult and generally unprofitable.

8. Surrendering Too Early

Never surrender because of early failures. At 50 minutes, all that gold they got from kills won't mean a thing.

9. Not Closing Out Games

If your team derps around for 50 minutes, that 15-0 Lee Sin isn't going to be looking particularly effective, especially considering he was probably already full build at 25 minutes in. 

10. Not Pushing Multiple Lanes At Once

A somewhat more advanced tactic, many teams end up in an extended siege in one lane, only to later discover two massive groups of minions pushing towards your base instead!

The easiest way to prevent this is by using banner of command. If the waves look fairly even and you're heading mid lane, by dropping banner on a side lane minion, it guarantees that eventually, one of the enemy team members must go to the other lane to clear minions. 

That's when you strike.

    Hey Sun! Great article, as always. I was just wondering if you could clarify tips 7 and 10, especially 7. I don't really understand what you mean. Is it like if our mid inhib is down, we shouldn't siege their mid inhib? Because if that's correct, I don't get why it's wrong to do so, because sieging other lanes would only give free pushing ability to the mid superminions. As for 10, how does banner of command affect pushing power? I never build it and I'm a Plat 2 supp main. If you should build this, in which cases should you do so and why? Thanks so much for the clarification!

  3. Hey mate, Banner of Command is an item. It gives some stats like 10%CDR, Health, AP, and Passive aura.


    It also has this active, that you can use. YOu use it on a lane minion. The minion will become a greatly more powerful minion and immune to magic damage also. Thats what he meant. That lane, that has the minion you buff with your banner of command, will push.

    I see what you mean, edited for clarity. Basically it's just not to overextend your siege after accomplishing your goal.


    If the enemy team has a ton of burst damage and my team is somewhat squishy, I'll opt for Locket rather than banner. If I'm playing an AP based champion like Janna and notice my team is mostly grouping, then I'll get banner of command to make sure we have more flexibility in rotations.

    Biggest thing I see is expecting the jungler to do everything in a gank or not noticing him coming at all. If u want a gank to work in your lane, engage. Burn the enemies abilities make them commit. Then right at that critical moment there's a rek'sai behind them. Rather then rek'sai knocks up and they use escapes while u hope to catch up and get an auto in.

    You sir, are now my favorite player, i don't know how many times a lane asks for a gank, then watches while i die to their 3/0 katarina, then comes in and dies after me, then procedes to rage because i fed their lane

    Excellent, thanks alot man. So, I guess say we get the enemy inhib, depending on the situation, we shouldn't always keep pushing for more objectives in case we're too low because it's too greedy.

    Expecting a Jungler to gank your lane after you died to your enemy laner solo 4 times by 10 minutes. If the jungler comes, there is a chance that the now fed Irelia could 2v1 the jungler top lane of our team, or even worse a counter gank will almost always end with an easy two kills for the enemy team. Focus on winning lanes and even lanes. Don't try to gank for the 0-5 Sion against a 5-0 Irelia with trinity at 10 minutes, it will not end well.

    On the dragon: I think it's important to note that there's a big difference between dragons and towers. When a team kills the Dragon, that Dragon is gone forever, but towers will always be there for either team. The thing is that while a tower grants gold to your whole team, it's gold that is always there that your team can always get later. Especially with the first towers, it's gold that your team will inevitably receive at some point in the game. The Dragon is different, only one team gets it or the other, so once a team kills the Dragon, it's gone for good and the reward is forever lost essentially.

    This concept was a lot more important last season though. Since the reward for Dragon has changed, it doesn't grant as much of a bonus and doesn't affect the game as much as tower gold does unless one team is dominating every single Dragon all game long.

    Also, on the pink wards: in my experience playing in.... Very low level games... A lot of teams really dont ward at all! I wish they did so I could actually get use out of my Oracle Lens, but I've started just buying the pink trinket on my supports after seeing if their support even buys sightstone.

  12. Guys one big mistake/bad thing is when you gank and dont PING (enough). Please ping at the lane/enemy laner. so your teammate can know that oh you are coming.

  14. Yeah... funny. when i sweeping i cant find wards sometimes. and sometimes i find them in an abundance when the enemy is not dumb (support especially).


    I can't count how many matches I find a few wars early game but nothing after that pretty much. lol. enemy supp HAS sightstone but DOES NOT use it :DD

    Used to have a problem with 1, but then I started playing support nautilus. One good hook can chunk the enemy carry for 70% of their hp, and 10 seconds later a followup flash auto combo will finish them off.

    And 10 good golly, I really don't want to clear the sidewaves as a full tank support, I would rather be warding or escorting carries, but for some darn reason my carries keep grouping mid even when I ping hey huge wave here $$$, or we would have baron and their mid was down but we could push side waves. (least I have some AP and AD to work with pushing.)

    Oh I know! Some days it's literally a 1v1 between the supports over wards, and others it's literally no contest.

    I fall into that habit as well, we either win so hard I tunnel on the combat, and my wards expire for a bit (Until an objective comes up). Or lose so hard that it is too dangerous to ward alone. >_<

    More often than not tho, I just time the wards and give the jungler the info on when they expire so he doesn't waste time.

    I hate when bot lane feeds Draven 6 kills then expects me, that i have been farming my jungle peacefully or helping top, to magically come down and get a doublé kill and a dragon for free, and Im like "you wanna give him a triple m8". Then I get reported for Verbal Abuse and Offensive Language. This is the life of the jungler.
    Apart from my angry rambling I agree. I always wait 10/20 seconds for my laners to commit to the gank. If they dont, I leave.

    have unique auras i didn't know if it was pointless or it was good to

    The worst thing i see when playing jungler is "Dat jungler" being said by a guy that has 1-6, you gave him fb and died magically 6 times 1 v 1 from the enemy laner. I rly feel sad for all the fellow junggers.

    Happened to me a lot. Got countered hard in lane, lets say zed vs kayle, and my jungler making the worst possible ganks and getting rekt by enemy. Then i end up dying too or.missing lot of cs.

    Another bad thing junglers do is ganking while huge minion wave is under you tower, without u having any minions. I never follow these ganks, unless its free kil ofc, and they rage at me and when i do one of us gets rekt, minions op early game, and its not worth it even if we take the kill cause overcommit or 1 death and loss of many cs

    I agree with this so much. I remember I tried Elise for the first time and I knew I had to pressure early so I ganked mid lane on an overextended Yasuo. The Leblanc didn't even distort in and asked why I was ganking so early

  33. Many people have already said it, support can carry with any team that is decent so after, imo, silver, a support main should be able to carry if good enough. I think below that, players won't really pay attention to any of your wards or shotcalling. Plus, people might be a support main, but it doesn't mean they will take that role in ranked. I've seen players have first pick and not pick their best champion for whatever reason (or play a champ they have never played before) and take the role that someone else wanted and that is in plat. People make strange decisions in ranked.

    I'm always angry when I'm a squishy ADC and trying to ask my team to push and their all like NOOO. From their lack of pushing we got both nexus turrets down but they won... I tried to back door but wasn't able to 1v1 their veigar

    I main jungle... and I AGREE! I say to a guy who fed "Hey man, farm under turret so you don't feed" and they're like "I know what I'm doing and why don't you come gank here? That's the reason I'm feeding"


    I usually mute them then, and I think:
    #1 You fed them
    #2 Don't expect ganks from your jungler. You shouldn't need to outnumber them to win a 1v1 or a 2v2 (with exceptions of super hard counters of course)
    #3 There are other lanes too, you know; ones that actually benefit from ganks

    It is a good role to climb with because most low elo players refuse to play support, so it's more than likely that the enemy support has no idea how to play the role. If you are a support main and know how to play this gives you a significant advantage in bot lane. Supports can easily carry bot lane early, especially if you play one of the really oppressive bot lane supports such as Nami, Sona, Karma, Zyra (thresh and leona are also good but require follow up from your adc which may not happen, you can literally 1v2 a lane with your adc doing nothing but afk farming with the 4 I mentioned).


    If you play it right, your adc will get a free lane to farm and will be up a massive amount of gold and farm on the enemy adc/support.

    3. most of time, i did hold my aoe ult something... aoe ult cd is tooooo long... always happen when they are fighting back without escaping...
    4. always did... some jungler did... why they jungle ;\
    5. always did.. dont care how unsafe it is...
    6. boc on manaless? no... nasus? yes... locket on top? mid? jungler... no? so wasteful and pain in the ass to build... most sup should take it tho...
    7.tried as possible.. usually not happen in low elo...
    8. always surrender at 25-30 if we absolutely have no chance...
    9. never... if i suck then be tank or suppport...
    10. always push when available... thats skill of top... or great pusher... thats very risky strategy tho....

    A pick is when your team kills someone of the opposing team without much they can do about it (ie in a 3v1). A skirmish is a small fight (2v2, 2v3, 3v3)

    I will give an example to my understanding of each:
    Pick you notice the enemy adc going for your red buff (the greedy b*tch). You don't take kindly to enemies in your jg so bot and mid converge on her and give her the death she deserves.
    Skirmish: You see the enemy bot lane and jungler trying to take your red buff (those **sholes) you don't take kindly to enemies in your jungle so bot and mid converge. The enemy team shoots back but you kill janna and they retreat.

    As morgana you should buy Banner of Command since it'll provide you ap, and some gold (from the promoted minion). You should let someone else in your team (say the tank) buy Iron solari.

    ADC and Support rely on your teammate to win your lane, and the adc needs to be protected by the support and the support needs to be carried on team fights by the adc. That's why I think those are the hardest lanes to carry w/.

    Yeah, while not totally pointless it is bad because it is inefficient. The auras don't stack, and part of each item's cost is going towards that aura. There will always be a better option for that second item slot.

  51. Most common and also most easy to fix mistake - not upgrading all trinkets!

    Right when the last yellow trinket buff was applied I know it will be OP, and it was said on this page and on many others so many times (now even on the official LoL website). Still you rarely see teams that have all their trinkets upgraded even at lv 12-14, and even in high gold elo.

    It's basically free vision, you pay 250 gold for warding power equal to that of a Sight Stone. Once you hit level 9, you should never leave the base with > 250 gold in pocket without upgrading your trinket before.

    You should definitely add that to the list.
