Introduction

This week's team composition brings back an old favorite and adds a Season 5 twist. With Yorick falling out of favor and Sion much more potent than ever before, swapping Yorick out with Sion gives this team some much needed initiation power that stacks well with the amount of AOE damage and CC they have.

Theme(s)

This team is somewhat based around a "protect the kog'maw" composition, but instead contains some heavy damage mages to complement his long range damage. This not only gives Kog'maw some cannon fodder for enemy assassins to go after instead of him, but also provides huge alternative damage sources in case he falls.

Passive Damage on Death - The combined passives of all these champions together is absolutely insane in terms of how much potential damage they can dish out. Between Zyra and Kog'maw's true damage passives combined with Sion's insane reanimated last ditch effort, the enemy team needs to continuously kite or face death.

Strong Turtling Power - Between Zyra, Karthus, and Kog'maw, this team can easily lay down enough CC at range while clearing waves. This makes them extremely difficult to dive, and can farm until late game if things start turning sour.

Strong Stacking CC - The CC potential is very high among all the members of this team. Although the pure stun time is fairly low, this team's combination of slows is enough to keep enemies stuck for a good duration.

Strong Magic Damage Synergy - Combined with Karthus' 15% magic resist reducing wall, this team can quickly burst down enemy champions with a combination of magic attacks. This means that Kog'maw will find little in the way of resistances when he starts dishing out the pain.

Key Concepts

  • Keeping Kog'maw alive should be a priority, the rest of the team can do plenty while they're dead as long as they make sure their ults go off.
  • This team has strong tower seige and waveclear, but low defenses for their back line. It's generally better to focus on peeling than diving, even with Karthus sitting on top of the enemy team (unless he's super fed).
  • Good positioning by Zyra and Karthus will be key to this fight as maximizing their spell damage will mean vary the amount of burst damage your team can put out by a huge amount.

Countering

To counter this team, a set of early game burst damage champions would do best. Top lane will be somewhat difficult to "win" against regardless, so a team with strong roam can do well.

Here's an example team that may succeed:
  • Leblanc - Strong early game burst
  • Lee Sin - Strong early game burst and roam
  • Maokai - Strong waveclear, excellent TP ganks; defensive ultimate also helps vs AOE
  • Blitzcrank - Without escapes, bot lane can fall behind quickly if they get snowballed on
  • Kalista - Good re-positioning skills combined with strong snowball potential will help the team snowball. Her natural hurrican + lifesteal build will also be very good for sustained battles and bursting down the backline.

I read and enjoy all of them. The teams sound so much fun, then I realise my ranked 5s team are all one trick ponies!
